Multnomah County is officially opened for business.  As the song says, ‘there is a season for all things”.  This is the season to help those businesses that have been so decimated by the past 3-month closure.   Please do what you can to make a difference in your community!   Every day we read about another business that is going to officially close their doors or how some business owner is having to decide between several locations of which one he/she will save.   What a difficult choice! Each has employees, each has a unique sacrifice on behalf of its owners for its start-up, etc.

However, the most critical part of the situation is how many lives it effects – think about it.  A business closes – it is not just the employees, but the insurance agent that loses a policy, the vendors that supply the product, the electric company receives fewer resources, the landlord that has an empty building that still must make a mortgage payment, and of course at the end of the day, the tax revenues generated by this business that helps provide education, fire, and police protection for the entire community.   And, of course, the economic stimulation provided by the money the employees spend in the community.

Gosh – we are all interrelated – who knew!  And what affects one, affects us all.   Please be strategic in your spending – remember those restaurants that do not have a drive-thru that has been horrifically impacted during the past few months.   Yes – get out of your car and walk-in!!!  Think about stores in downtown Gresham that sell greeting cards. Take the time to go purchase your next birthday card at one of them.   If nothing else this recent exercise of “Sheltering in to Save Lives” has given us all time to consider what is really important.   I hope you, like me, think “Saving Local Businesses” is important!

General Manager, Bess Wills is dedicated to the Shop Local mindset and demonstrates it often.  Recently she purchased a number of gift certificates from  Core Coffee located in Gresham Station.  Not only is this a favorite coffee destination for many of the dealerships 50+ employees but they also recognize and support the Shop Local message.  Bess utilized the gift certificates as signs of appreciation for all the hard work her staff has accomplished during the lockdown.
