naughty or nice santaI got an e-mail this morning from my friend Sue Piazza on the benefits of giving.   She is my role model on the subject of giving.  Remember, she is the one when she turned 50 set out to raise $10,000 for five different charities and ended up raising over $70,000 and added a charity.   So why is giving good for you?

Giving makes you feel happy and content. It’s even good for your health.    Whether it’s your time you’re giving, or a gift you’re buying, giving to others lifts your spirits and it’s called the “helper’s high.”   In addition, have you ever seen someone do something nice for someone else?  Next time that happens, pay attention to the person who is doing the giving.   They light up!  That reaction is nicknamed “giver’s glow.”

Research has even suggested that giving may improve physical health and that it decreases stress.  Gratitude conjures gratitude and gratitude is essential to happiness and health.  Giving is also contagious, many times when we are generous, it inspires those to be generous towards others.  No matter which way you give:  volunteering your time, buying gifts, or donating money don’t be surprised if you find yourself benefiting from happiness in the process.

So, this Holiday Season get the “helper’s high” or the giver’s glow!”   Bless others with a smile, a phone call just to say “hi”, or a simple handmade gift –it is all for your health!    Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
