The 2023 Ford Escape saw a significant overhaul that fully changed the lineup, included new trim levels, and included some significant technological advancements including Sync 4. We currently have a 2023 Ford Escape ST-Line Elite all-wheel drive hybrid in our fleet, and we have been fielding inquiries about it while we test drive it to get a feel for it. Though one mode truly outperforms the other two in terms of effectiveness, we decided to talk about three of its four drive modes today because they have something to offer all sorts of drivers.

Normal Mode

It’s likely that the majority of 2023 Ford Escape hybrid owners will simply leave their cars in this mode, which is totally acceptable and might even be the greatest way to utilize this hybrid’s features. According to Ford, Normal balances every aspect of the car for “comfort, convenience, and excitement.” This is a true statement, in my opinion, as the Escape does convert over to electric power as much as it can in this mode, and even though pushing it causes the gas engine to start running, it doesn’t seem to lack power. According to my experience, the Escape can frequently travel on electric power in this mode while cruising around town and even occasionally while traveling on the highway. Normal’s regenerative braking is undoubtedly a little bit more grabby than it would be in a car powered solely by gasoline, but it is still a reliable and simple system.

Eco-Mode

Undoubtedly, some 2023 Ford Escape hybrid customers will want to get the most out of their vehicle, and Eco will probably appease them. First off, there is less air conditioning available in this mode, but I didn’t really mind because the car had already cooled off by the time I switched to Eco to conduct my tests. Evidently, performance has also been reduced a little, though not as much as I had anticipated. By no means is it dangerous to accelerate from a stop signal, but it seemed to take more work to get speed. Additionally, the Escape slowed down a bit more quickly once I let off the gas pedal in this mode, suggesting that regenerative braking was a little more aggressive. For local driving, I preferred Normal over Eco since I didn’t think Eco kept the hybrid in electric mode more frequently than I thought it should, and Normal is excellent at converting to electric mode when it can.

Sport Mode

The 2023 Ford Escape hybrid’s Sport mode, according to Ford, is for “spirited and engaged driving.” In the end, straight acceleration felt about the same in Sport as it did in Normal. Sport effectively converts the Escape into a standard internal combustion vehicle with auto start/stop, as the hybrid will run on electricity when stopped but switch to running on gas as soon as the brake pedal is removed. This is what gives Sport a slight speed advantage, but drivers may get the same results in Normal by just applying a little more pressure to the accelerator. In spite of this, I could have sworn that the transmission used simulated gear ratios in this mode, albeit I could be mistaken. Because the Escape appears to never operate exclusively on electricity while moving in this mode, power is slightly more readily available at all times.

EV Mode

The 2023 Ford Escape Hybrid also features an EV (Electric Vehicle) mode, which allows you to drive in pure electric mode under certain conditions. When the battery charge is sufficient, you can switch to EV mode and drive using only electric power, reducing emissions and operating costs. This mode is particularly useful for short commutes or driving in urban areas.

Snow/Sand Mode

In challenging weather or off-road conditions, the Snow/Sand mode in the 2023 Ford Escape Hybrid provides enhanced traction and stability. This mode adjusts the vehicle’s power delivery and traction control systems to optimize performance on slippery surfaces such as snow or sand. It helps maintain control and confidence when driving in adverse conditions.

Slippery Mode

Similar to the Snow/Sand mode, the Slippery mode is designed to improve traction and stability on wet or icy roads. This mode optimizes the vehicle’s handling and stability control systems to provide better grip and prevent wheel slip. It is an excellent choice when driving in rainy or icy conditions, offering added safety and peace of mind.

Tow Mode

For those who need to tow trailers or other heavy loads, the 2023 Ford Escape Hybrid offers a dedicated Tow mode. When engaged, this mode adjusts the power-train and transmission settings to optimize performance while towing. It ensures a confident and controlled towing experience, providing the necessary power and stability to handle heavy loads.

Regenerative braking also looked much less harsh in Sport, almost as if it were acting like a standard gasoline model. If you were forced to buy a hybrid and don’t care about fuel efficiency but yet want easy access to the Escape’s power, this mode is unquestionably an excellent choice.
