I am not a morning person bur our community is sure fortunate that the members of the Gresham Breakfast Lions Club meet every Thursday morning at 6:45 a.m. at the local M& M Restaurant in downtown Gresham.  They meet, sing, listen to great speakers, eat breakfast but most importantly they plan to help others and have been doing so for over 38 years in a variety of ways.

Gresham Breakfast Lions ClubLions Club Members worldwide have worked to help those visually impaired.   So it was not a surprise to see the Lions Club show up at the Gresham Chamber of Commerce’s recent “Try Local Tuesday” event at the “Guide Dogs for the Blind” facility in Boring.   They didn’t just show up but showed up with a check for $6,000 which they presented to the organization so Guide Dogs can provide that specially trained dog to someone who is visually impaired allowing them greater independence in their day to day lives.

Guide Dogs for the Blind does not take any government funding and donations from organization like the Lions Club and individuals allow them to fulfill their mission for the Blind by “empowering lives by creating exceptional partnerships between people, dogs, and communities.  Guide Dogs for the Blind envisions a world with greater inclusion, opportunity and independence by optimizing the unique capabilities of people and dogs.

At the “Try Local” event participants were given an overview of the life of one of these dog from puppy to retired veteran and they were also given a tour of the facility as well as testimonial on how they have enhanced the lives of tens of thousands of individuals.

Keep up the great work Lions – we can SEE you are making a difference not only at the school for Guide Dogs but with your distribution of  scholarships to local students each year and the countless other projects you work/volunteer hard to support!
