People in the workforce banded together during the Industrial Revolution to demand better working conditions. In 1894, in honor of the people who fought for workers’ rights, Labor Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States. It was in New York City on September 5, 1882, that the first Labor Day holiday was observed.
