Running Boards vs Side Steps?

Running boards are long flat steps that reach from the A pillar to either the B or C pillars and can vary in width from 3" to 6" wide across the base. They are intended to create a gripping surface for stepping up into the vehicle. Side steps can share the same function but are generally smaller with a "hoop" style and provide a single step only where the door or doors are located. The price range for side steps and running boards start at $350 installed and can go all the way to $1800 for an electronic running board that deploys when the door is opened.
